BORDER STORM
Border Storm
1987
84 x 78in
oil on canvas
This painting was the result of my first visit to El Paso in 1977. Stunned by the sight of all these people crossing the Rio Grande in hope of finding a better life, my heart went out to them. What a huge event in a family’s life. The images of religion, conquest, poverty, bureaucracy, border police, murder and rape kept coming to me. I saw these as a wall or membrane these people had to traverse through to follow their dreams. First created as a lithograph in 1978. I finished the large painting in 1987.
